A new campaign is underway to get more Australians basing themselves in Christchurch for an autumn holiday next year.
For the first time, Qantas Holidays will be used as a travel partner for the promotion, Christchurch in next to no time, run in partnership with Christchurch Airport, the Christchurch regional tourism organisation – ChristchurchNZ and Tourism New Zealand.
Tony Saunders, Tourism New Zealand General Manager, Australia said the new promotion is about showing Australians that they can easily experience the best of the south island in just four or five days, from Christchurch.
“This campaign shows travellers that within two or three hours’ drive of Christchurch they can enjoy an incredible range of experiences; adventure activities like jet boating, kayaking or mountain biking; they can get closer to nature with whale watching in Kaikoura or swimming with dolphins in Akaroa – and enjoy award winning wineries and restaurants.
It’s also about breaking down the myth that travel in the South Island takes a lot of time and is only for intrepid travellers. We are growing awareness and knowledge of Christchurch as a city that’s within easy reach of many of the South Island’s favourite experiences. This work also shows the South Island as a great place to visit in autumn which is part of Tourism New Zealand’s strategy to promote shoulder season arrivals,” says Tony.
Christchurch Airport Chief Aeronautical & Commercial Officer, Justin Watson, says the campaign is a continuation of Christchurch Airport’s strong focus on increasing visitor arrivals from Australia.
“Over the past year, Christchurch has grown faster than the national average as more Australians discover all the region has to offer. With more than 1.9 million airline seats flying between Christchurch and Australia every year, partnerships such as this one are important to helping ensure more and more Australians can enjoy the best of the South Island.”
The campaign will run for six weeks will all digital traffic directed to a campaign hub on newzealand.com. It aims to increase Christchurch airport arrivals by five per cent from March-May in 2018, compared to 2017.
Statistics from the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment (MBIE) show visitors arriving into Christchurch airport visit, on average, 3.4 regions and stay in New Zealand for 12.1 days.
