The great and the good of NZ’s tourism industry will converge on Christchurch today to celebrate the achievements of the people and businesses working in the $35bn sector.

The New Zealand Tourism Awards 2017 will host 360 industry professionals at the sold out black-tie event at Wigram Air Force Museum tonight.

Among those attending the event, which is run by Tourism Industry Aotearoa, will be representatives from the 24 finalists vying for gongs in two individual and eight business categories and the Supreme Award.

Ryan Sanders’ Haka Tourism Group leads the contenders with two business and one individual nominations – Business Excellence for those with more than $6 million annual turnover, NZ Tourism Marketing and the Industry Champion.

“We’re really excited but we’re up against some big, big brands – Real Journeys, Skyline –  so whilst we have our fingers crossed I think we’re going to be quite lucky to sneak away with an award,” said Sanders.

Auckland’s TIME Unlimited Tours has been nominated for two awards – Industry Alignment and Māori Tourism.

“Just being named as a finalist means we’re amongst good company. Obviously, if you win there’s a bit of kudos but just being part of the lead up as a finalist means we’re amongst good company and that’s been great,” said founder Ceillhe Sperath.

Tourism Holding’s Angus Stubbs, Black Water Rafting’s long serving operations manager, is one of four contenders for the Industry Champion award.

“For me, it’s about the community, it’s really an accolade for Waitomo that we have got to this point,” said Stubbs. “I’m just stoked I’ve managed to make it 30 years in the industry!”

The winner of the Air New Zealand Supreme Tourism Award will receive international air travel to any Air New Zealand destination, valued at $10,000 + GST, to help them grow their tourism business.
